There are 3 sections of the great wall that people generally visit while in Beijing. We chose to go to an area called Mutianyu which is a little further outside of Beijing and therefore sees fewer tourists. It is also a section of the wall which for the most part remains unrestored. To get to the highest point of this section required a 5 km climb up stairs and rough footing, passing through 6 guard towers. We started the climb with about 15 other people but by the third guard tower there were only 5 of us still going. This is when the climb started to get a bit more difficult as this section of the wall was unrestored and the heat was getting pretty intense. Jacob, myself and one other guy from Canada reached the top first. I was going to give up climbing after the fourth tower but I’m really glad Jacob pushed me to keep going because the view was great – surrounding mountains, valleys and winding wall disappearing into the distance.
It’s really a remarkable structure and it’s hard to imagine that something so big was built over a thousand years ago.
Wow Lungi!! I'm really surprised. You've changed.
