I knew I was going to like Malaysia as soon as I received my in-flight meal from Delhi to Kuala Lampur…it was delicious, maybe even in the top 10! Kuala Lampur is a relatively small city and quite similar to Montreal. It‘s a very diverse city with people from various cultures; China, Thailand, India and Malaysia to name a few. There are also all the small things that we’ve begun to miss such as movie theatres, fast food chains and shopping malls. The combination of modern amenities and traditional markets, food and culture gives KL a very unique and warm vibe. It goes without saying that a mix of these cultures results in an incredible variety of food – I’ve spent the majority of our time here eating and trying the different snacks at food stalls. KL is definitely one of my favourite places so far.
We decided to spend a few days to just hang around and recharge ourselves before getting back on the road. It’s been a long time since we’ve had any form of western comforts so we took it all in while we could. We went to see Pirates of the Caribbean at the movie theater underneath the impressive Petronas Towers (and had popcorn), we ate hamburgers and nachos at Chilli’s, had strong drinks at an Irish Pub and then took a cab home using a meter! An actual metered taxi – this is my favourite part of the whole night; not having to haggle with a taxi driver over the price and then re-haggle when he doesn’t feel like dropping us off where we asked.
We took some time to walk around the neighbourhods and lungi got one of those ear candle wax removal things?? We also visited the Batu Caves which house an Indian Temple and is guarded by a massive golden statue. To access the temple, you need to climb 272 steps and navigate through dozens of monkeys searching for tourists handing out bananas.
We will definitely return to Kuala Lampur and Malaysia sometime in the future but for now we’re off to Indonesia to do some Island hoping and to find the mysterious Komodo Dragon.
Well, it seems as if you've made a miraculous recovery, Jacob! Hamburgers indeed! We're relieved that you are back on your feet and enjoying all the comforts, entertainment and great food. I imagine you'll pass through Singapore on your way to Indonesia if you go by boat. And Singapore is really an amazing, modern city on a tiny island, full of skyscapers and plenty of rules and regulations. You'll see....enjoy the voyage! xxx
